Given the pessimism-laden screed I wrote earlier in the day, today’s events at Semple Stadium should represent a good day’s work. The minors showed up (as if it were necessary) how much I know by not only winning the Munster title for only the fourth time in the county’s history but doing it with some style, always being one step ahead of their more illustrious opponents from start to finish. It was a thoroughly deserved win, and makes you feel better about the future.
Meanwhile the seniors rolled with punches when it looked like they were about to be utterly destroyed, trimming an 11-point deficit early in the second half to a mere four by the end. However, you can’t help but feel that Waterford were slightly flattered by the final score. The courage they showed in knuckling down when a massacre looked on the cards was commendable and there is much to build on for the next round of the qualifiers. But did Tipp ease up? A total of 1-4 in the second half suggests they might have done. With Kilkenny now looming in our half of the draw like a great big looming thing, you might as well book tickets for that Michael Jackson gig you fancied in early September.
