Confidence wouldn’t have been high going into this game, what with a good dozen All Star statues in convalescence and suspensions providing fodder for Waterford-are-knacks trolls. It was important to see good things right from the off, and the number of clubs represented on the Waterford team was heartening. A competitive county championship is not a sufficient condition for inter-county success, but it’s probably a necessary one and it’s great to see that players can aspire to play for the county without taking the big club soup. And it’s really important we all stick together when we have to take on the might of two of the largest counties in the land . . .
