There was no way I was going to indulge in any nonsense about Kilkenny springing a surprise against Waterford in the National Football League, so attention was duly focused on events in Cusack Park between Clare and Limerick. I guessed you wouldn’t want to be relying on RTÉ or Aertel, especially on a Saturday where there were no other football matches except those in Division Four. Eventually I decided to tune in to Clare FM and found Limerick seven points up midway through the second half. Having only scored 1-2 in the first fifty-something minutes it looked highly unlikely that Clare would turn it around, but they came right back into it leading to a highly exciting finish where Clare got to within a point heading into injury time. The teams swapped points before the final possession in which Clare got a free 45 metres out which went agonisingly wide.
Having slaughtered Kilkenny as expected in Freshford, the players must have been pretty deflated to come off and find all that out. Waterford find themselves in the unpleasant position of being top going into the final round but vulnerable to being overtaken. Thankfully a draw would be enough as they’ve nudged ahead of Clare on score difference. Those late scores against the Cats could yet prove crucial.
