Before the All-Ireland final, I expressed the hope that Kilkenny would beat Tipperary. One reason for this was that with it would make me feel better about our inability to win the McCarthy Cup if one team won the whole lot, a team indisputably the best of all time. With Tipperary’s win we saw that they could be taken by the right team – we just weren’t the right team, and that’s not a nice thought to face up to.
It’s not all doom and gloom though. With Tipperary taking the top prize, in theory that leaves the winners of the provincial titles lying one step below them. And in theory (yes, this is a bit of a stretch) we only lost by seven points compared to the eight by which Kilkenny lost, so we win that particular tiebreaker. In your face, Cats!
