Back in 1999, when Come on the Déise came into being in its Geocities guise, it was an expression of optimism about the future of Waterford GAA. After 1998 it would only be a matter of time before Liam McCarthy came a-calling, and I wanted to be there when it happened to document it for the ages. Well, it didn’t quite work out that way and there has always been a gnawing fear that the blog would become a never-ending epitaph for the headstone of Waterford’s ineptitude. That fear has not been assuaged by the results archive with its legion of woe. But it does make you appreciate just how exhilarating these times are, and the kernel of hope remains.
And you wonder whether collectively we all see that kernel in 2011, for having whined for years at the lack of blogs about the GAA in general and Waterford in particular we have no fewer than three other blogs on the go now, ruminating on the Limerick game here, here and here. We had a good winter and the lack of dispute over teams (Tomás’s team in particular is spookily close to Davy’s) suggests we’re on the one road, sharing the one load. Is it the right road? Cue plenty of hopefully good-natured disagreement.
